Marshall Project Collaboration

Exploring ways to activate experiences built on investigative journalism and community engagement in multiple cities

The Marshall Project is a Pulitzer Prize-winning non-profit newsroom that investigates  the U.S. criminal justice and immigration systems. In collaboration with The Marshall Project, the Lab is exploring how the outlet can expand the ways it uses experiential formats in its investigative storytelling and community engagement.

Our collaboration would focus on the three cities where The Marshall Project has a local focus: Jackson, Miss., St. Louis, Mo., and Cleveland, Oh. We plan to prototype an experience that would be customized to each locale but built on the same platform. The goal is to develop a series of best practices for journalism nonprofits interested in pursuing novel community engagement and storytelling strategies.

Collaborating with the lab will help advance The Marshall Project's mission to engage deeply with communities affected by the criminal justice and immigration systems, and to realize our journalism and deep expertise in new, ever-more creative ways. Our aim is to bring both invaluable information and connection to communities that are often underserved and unheard.

Local Investigations and Engagement

Beyond expanding and deepening the impact of this investigative series, this collaboration will develop best practices for multi-city immersive experiences; refine how communities are involved in the production and presentation of investigative journalism; and make issues around criminal justice and immigration visible on a street and community level.
